Delft tour – History
In the 17th century, the VOC was sailing across the whole
world. In China, the Chinese porcelain was very populair. The Dutch people
loved it. But the blue and white Chinese porcelain was very expensive and
difficult to get hands on, because of the language barrier. At this moment the
Dutch potteries saw their opportunity. They created the pottery that is now
known as the Delft blue pottery. In the end of the 17th century and beginning
of the 18th century, there were 32 Delftware factories. At this time the
factories were at the highlight. In the late 18th century, they got a lot of
competition from the English porcelain. The quality was good and the price low.
At this time, most of the Dutch factories had to close. The Delftse Pauw was one
of this factories, but nowadays the factory is open for public.
